Bear Update

Yesterday I was in the cafeteria with Quinn's class. The Kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders finished and left while Kenna, Lizza, and I stayed back to finish. In 10 minutes they all ran back into the cafeteria like bats out of hell -- screaming and echoing and stomping and jumping and yelling at me, "There's a bear in your front yard." They had left the playground to retreat inside because of rain, but the mama bear and her two cubs outside the school at my neighbors house in broad day light incited the riot and the running and the screaming. They were freaked and excited all at the same time. I felt like a thief in the night as I grabbed Kenna and Lizza and ran home -- and slammed the door.

Our neighbors' dog, Gracie, only barks for one reason -- bears -- and families of bears, I guess. She's been barking the last hour. When the kids and Tim came home from the pool while I was working, I couldn't hear their voices -- just stomping. I called down to make sure it was them -- and not a black, furry, hungry bear family. I had this visual of a bear coming to get a snack and then getting pissed that we eat all our birthday party candy -- and coming upstairs to get me. I was picturing myself climbing out the window. It was crazy, but it entered my mind.

And tonight, I just finished work, and I was thinking of trimming some kale from the Garden to chop into some eggs. And then I remembered if I leave the house now to get my dinner -- there is a good chance I will be dinner.

Just thought you'd like to hear the thoughts and new reality of this So CAL Utahan. Times they are a changin'.
