School Lunch

Well, school lunch, organic or not, got expensive really fast in Ouray, Colorado. So this week Quinn picked 2 out of 5 meals to have for "hot lunch" and the other days she will bring her "cold lunch." So, since I have never made a kindergarten school lunch before, we had to do some prep.

We drove 40 miles to go to Target and buy a lunch box and some pretty cool princess Tupperware. Her teacher is a green machine, so I am a little embarrassed to send lots of zippy bags and other non recyclable goods. It's only been a week. No need to get judged yet. Plenty of time for that later. So, Quinn picked out a princess lunch box with a hologram that makes Cinderella and Belle dance and wave their arms. It was a little too small, but God forbid we get one that fits the containers ... Once she saw the dancing... the shopping was over.

And then tonight it was time to get all ready for tomorrow. Quinn and I talked about her choices and how to make her snacks and lunches for school. She learned how to make a sandwich, and she practiced -- over and over -- opening the container just right so the trail mix won't fall out. She is all ready! The lunch is stored away in the fridge for tomorrow. And the beauty is -- when she forgets it -- I can put it on the porch for her to pick up on her walk from the school across the street to the cafeteria. Ok, I guess I'll have to walk 50 yards to hand it to her -- but that is still pretty close. So, hopefully if I teach Quinn well, she can take over lunch making duties, and it won't matter that her super nice mother is a flake. All this awesome mothering is making me so tired.
