So Quinn is on the coolest field trip right now. She and her first grade class got on the bus after lunch and rode down to the next town 9 miles down the road. They are headed to Ridgeway elementary. While they are there they get to meet and greet with the only other first grade class around. They took pencils and notebook so they could take notes about what's in the room and about who they meet. Then when they get back they get to do diagrams to compare and contrast what is different and the same about the two schools into classrooms. The two classes will write letters back-and-forth. And then later in the year each kid will get a specific penpal to write to as their literacy gets better. And then - get this - they're going back to other school three times during the year to do other investigations and to meet more people.
I think this is the cutest idea ever. Such a neat way to say we are too small towns that live together. And such as fun way to bring social in with literacy and math and observation and writing. I love it. Quinn is totally bounded to run it to a bunch of these new first-graders at the park or at soccer or at all kinds of activities. I'm just really excited about it. And Quinn had been freaking out about it. Quinn doesn't always know what's going on at school. The details bog her mind sometimes. But she has been completely aware of this field trip and what it means and what it is and when it's happening. It makes me really excited to see an activity that's so engaging for her and so exciting for her and just really fits right who she is and what she needs. So I'm basically sitting here so excited for her to come home from school and tell me all about the first grade at Ridgway elementary. Thumbs up for our local school.
